When I travel on holiday to a warm, relaxing location I generally pack my sketchpad and watercolours. I love spending lazy relaxing afternoons creating watercolour paintings of jewellery whilst sitting in the shade. It can be such a relaxing experience, although one thing which can really impact my enjoyment is the stress of the blank sketchbook page.
A couple of weeks ago I met Jennie Maizels, a well known children's book illustrator at Blogtacular. Jennie had brought along a selection of her beautiful Pop Up books and also three of her illustrated travel sketchbooks. Documenting her holidays through illustrations and typography, Jennie manages to capture the very essence of the places she visits. I took some photos to give you a glimpse of how beautiful these were, I was blown away would love to be able to learn to create something similar. Aren't they beautiful. Lucky for us, Jennie is starting an online Sketchbook Club which is due to launch this month. The club is suitable for all ages and skill levels and is definitely for adults. I reached out to Jennie after the conference to find out more about the club.
As an illustrator Jennie is never faced with a blank page, she is either following a brief with her Pop Up Books or with her holiday dairies, the brief is the day just passed. There is no ambiguity or uncertainty, however she recognises the fear that many of us experience when faced with a big white blank page. With the Sketchbook club, Jennie aims to remove this fear by in each session telling everyone exactly what to do. There are printouts with references for all images and where applicable templates to trace or copy. She relates the club sessions to following a recipe. Jennie will give us the ingredients, methods and provide pictures of the finished cake as it were. I’m really excited to take part in the new online club and if you would like to get involved you can contact Jennie at www.jenniemaizels.com You can also follow Jennie on Instagram and Twitter - @jenniemaizels
